Jupiter - Nederlands

Jupiter - English

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. This photo shows Jupiter at a staggering distance of over 600 million kilometers (3,996 AU). You can clearly see Jupiters characteristic cloud bands.

Galileo Galilei discovered Jupiters four largest moons with his homemade telescope in 1610. Although he is considered the father of modern astronomy, he payed the price of his heliocentric world view (that the earth revolves around the Sun and not vice versa). In 1633, when Galileo was 69 years old, he was sentenced to formal imprisonment at the pleasure of the Inquisition. On the following day this was commuted to house arrest, which he remained under for the rest of his life. As the "infallible" Bible states that "the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved" (Psalm 104:5), Galileo surely deserved some proper punishment!
