Joffre Lakes Provincial Park - Nederlands

Joffre Lakes Provincial Park - English

When you follow the Sea-to-Sky Highway up north for about two and a half hours from downtown Vancouver, you'll find the Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. This beautiful piece of unspoiled nature was explored for the first time in 1957 by a small group of climbers. After six days of climbing they left the area and it wasn't until 1970 when humans returned here to build a logging road. This magnificent area of jagged peaks, icefields, cold rushing streams and turquoise blue lakes was established as a recreation area in 1988 and became a Class A park in 1996.

When the ice from the glacier melts, 'rockflour' (or glacial slit) is suspended in the water. This is how the Joffre Lakes get their striking turquoise color; these silt particles reflect green and blue wavelengths of sunlight. Whether you're into hiking, mountain climbing or fishing, visiting the Joffre Lake Provincial Park should be on your bucket list.
