The Milky Way - English

The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our Solar System. From Earth, we see the Milky Way from the inside as luminous band spanning the sky, when it is dark enough.

The Earth orbits the Sun, which is a star. The Milky Way contains between 100 and 400 billion stars. It is thought that there are about as many planets in our galaxy. But do they contain life?

The astronomer Frank Drake has developed a mathematical formula, the Drake equation, to estimate the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy that can communicate with us using radio signals. According to some, this formula delivers, even with conservative estimates, 10 to 1000 communicating civilizations in our galaxy alone. And our Milky Way is just one of billions of other galaxies.
